Yet, the mpiavihra tradition only existed from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The mpiavihra is an exceptional type of image-house, not only for its specific timeframe and unique construction technology, but also for its complex architectural conception of the Buddhist worldview and soteriology. This book examines the significant aspects of mpiavihra architecture and documents some of the distinctive examples of mpiavihra with an analysis of their architectural design and symbolic content.

Philosophy of Life looks at the person's relationship to their world. Such a relationship is impregnated with tension arising from constant decision making. By making decisions, a person shifts their modal (possible) worlds, which include their sets of circumstances and their vistas on various aspects of life. A shift between different positions on one's existence in this world creates structural cognitive, emotional and strategic changes that transform what is possible and what is impossible with regard to one's life choices. The decision-making process, on fundamental life issues, is crucially related not only to one's general values but also to one's view of logical possibilities. The year proved to be difficult and damaging to King Charles II, as political, religious, and personal matters provoked controversy and disquiet, and the country teetered on the brink of major constitutional problems. My research sets drama against this backdrop. Theatrical records for this period are patchy and, for the most part, frustratingly incomplete: this book does not attempt to reconstruct the day-to-day operations of the playhouses, but rather it uses the available evidence of the extant new and revived plays we know (or believe) to have been performed in the 167071 theatrical season, and argues that this was the period in which serious and far-reaching political and dramatic questions began to be seriously asked and (tentatively) answered.

Meghan Marie Hammond shows how five exemplary writers (Henry James, Dorothy Richardson, Katherine Mansfield, Ford Madox Ford, and Virginia Woolf) tackle the so-called 'problem of other minds' in ways that reflect and enrich early twentieth-century discourses of fellow feeling. Hammond argues that these authors reconfigure notions of intersubjective experience; their writings mark a key shift away from sympathetic forms of literary representation toward empathic forms that strive to provide an immediate sense of another's thoughts and feelings. But while literary modernism values empathic experience as an ideal, it is also teeming with voices that recognise potential for danger, even violence, in acts of empathy. Traditionally defined as a decorative style that conjured a fanciful and idealised notion of China, chinoiserie was revived among London's avant-garde circles, the Bloomsbury group, the Vorticists and others, who like their eighteenth-century forebears, turned to China as a cultural and aesthetic utopia.

As part of Modernism's challenge to the 'universality' of so-called Western values and aesthetics, the turn to China would contribute much more than has been acknowledged to Modernist thinking. As these 10 new chapters demonstrate, China as an intellectual and aesthetic utopia dazzled intellectuals and aesthetes. At the same time the consumption of Chinese exoticism became commercialised. The essays show that from cutting-edge Modernist chic to mass culture and consumer products, the vogue for chinoiserie style and motifs permeated the art and design of the period.
