John Gerozisis is a Science graduate from the University of New South Wales, majoring in Entomology and Zoology. He then worked in the industry as an entomologist and consultant and taught NSW TAFE's pest control course for ten years. With Phillip Hadlington, he kept Urban Pest Management up to date until 2004. The improvements between the rst Hadlington/Staunton textbook and that 2004 revised version are due to Gerozisis's knowledge and eorts. He spent another ten years with a leading Sydney building consultancy before retiring to Tasmania.
Ion Staunton came back to the pest control scene to do the revisions for the 2008 edition as well as this new edition. He, like Gerozisis, studied entomology at UNSW. He became the technical ocer at Houghton & Byrne (before they were taken over by Rentokil) and spent 25 years as honorary secretary of the NSW Pest Controllers Association and the Council of Australian Pest Control Associations. He helped in setting up the new Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association and organised his last national conference in 1988 but kept in touch with executive director Doug Howick during his more than ten years at the helm. With Howick, he co-wrote Colonies in Collision, a history of the pest control industry. In collaboration with Lextar and Pesense, he made his idea of the TermiSensor a reality. It allows daily electronic checks for termite activity in monitors instead of manual inspections multiple times each year, saving manhours and travel time, and eliminating those missed opportunities to bait.
]]>Since 1947, Australia had governed Nauru in its capacity as the leading partner, with New Zealand and the United Kingdom, in a joint United Nations trusteeship over the island. Australia's core interest in Nauru comprised the extraction of Nauru's high-quality phosphate for the production of superphosphate for the rural industries in Australia, New Zealand and, to a lesser extent, the United Kingdom, on extremely favourable terms.
As these documents demonstrate, during the first half of the 1960s the context within which Australia developed its policies on Nauru became more difficult. Reflecting the expansion of UN membership following the emergence of newly independent countries in Africa and Asia, the United Nations General Assembly and its committees took a more concentrated interest in decolonisation and the exploitation of developing world resources. New Zealand and the United Kingdom began to seek to influence Australian policies on Nauru more than before. Last but certainly not least, the Nauruans began to campaign more effectively in pursuit of political and phosphate industry reforms.
For several years, there was a general consensus among Australian, New Zealand and United Kingdom policymakers, the United Nations Trusteeship Council and the Nauruans themselves that the best way to secure the future of the Nauruans was to arrange for their resettlement elsewhere. Doing this would also facilitate continued access to Nauruan phosphate. In the late 1950s, after efforts to find a suitable location in the Pacific Islands region had come to nothing, Australia proposed that the Nauruans migrate to Australia and become assimilated within the wider community. The Nauruans declined this proposal because of their wish to maintain their distinctive identity.
At the request of Nauruan leaders, Australia next turned its attention to identifying an island off the Australian coast as a suitable site for resettlement and eventually decided on Curtis Island, near Gladstone in Queensland. But agreement was not achieved, mainly because the Nauruans, while making important concessions, wanted 'sovereign independence' in order to preserve their national identity. Although understanding this aspiration, Australian policymakers were unwilling to surrender sovereignty over an Australian territory and instead offered local self-government powers on Curtis Island. Negotiations finally broke down in August 1964, with the Nauruans deciding to remain on their own island and seek independence, along with control over the phosphate industry and a larger share of the returns from phosphate extraction.

The monograph analyses first-generation Chernobyl survivors' imaginative reconstruction of events through testimony in the face of the Soviet Party's attempts to sublimate the narrative of the disaster into an official account. It also discusses the ways in which a second generation represents inherited, traumatic memory through a literary diaspora of Chernobyl and Soviet-Kazakh Semipalatinsk nuclear trauma, and how English-speaking writers not personally involved in the disaster engage in its memorialisation through discourses of horror and collective mourning.
]]>A doctor's education looks at first sight like a straightforward technical training, but 're-membering' it as a personal experience creates a new and disturbing picture, a blend of joys, absurdities and frustrations. The author observes his younger self's efforts to communicate and to regulate feelings in the prescribed way, and begins to see that to become a doctor is to be at the mercy of almost irresistible pressures. He picks up habits by mimicking the teachers, with sometimes disastrous results.
Communication, and even empathy, are made to seem like performances in which the doctor's self need play no part. Any other way of being a doctor is unimaginable. Hospital medicine figures in the book as a universe that is loveable and yet tragically unable to engage with its patients' ordinary lives. Doctors in the 1960s, as now, were focused on disease and had little to say about illness and suffering, let alone death. They were, and still are, curiously silent about healing, recovery and rehabilitation.
]]>Williams was a compassionate man. He was an intelligent American citizen and Korean war veteran, who claimed his right to American citizenship. Acutely aware of the broken promises of the US government, he remained fully invested in the rights, privileges, and responsibilities the Constitution guaranteed all of its citizens. As many of his contemporaries now confess, Williams's strength and appeal, as explained by his second son, John Williams, was his uncompromising stance and determination to act on the American dream he imagined for social, economic, and political equality for African Americans.
The skills he acquired as a journalist and propaganda specialist were key to his political development, evolution, and transnational collaborations with Cuba and China, which he used to challenge domestic policies in the United States, and way beyond the imagination of his supporters in the United States. Williams ultimately used these strengths, strategies, and collaborations to deliver liberating messages of freedom, resistance, and social and economic equality on behalf of the rights of African Americans. Williams significantly contributed to the Black freedom struggle and should not be forgotten. This book includes a collection of writings by and about Williams as an internationalist, pragmatist, and civil and human rights champion.
]]>The book combines the study of nation and community through a close engagement with Urdu literary culture in the twentieth century and particularly the work of pioneering literary women. It argues that gender and sexuality become fixed signifiers in the trauma of partition and the formation of the post-partition Islamic nation. The story of literary women in Pakistan taking up the mantle of public poets thus has to be understood in relation to the history of reform, anti-colonial resistance and a transnational Islamicate culture.
The book examines the presence of feminist thought in the work of progressive women poets charting their interrogation of the clash between secular and sacred values and the increasing split between liberal and Islamic nationalism. The book suggests that through their writing and experiences, women have negotiated sacred and secular spaces to move beyond a community that is subservient to nationalist ideology.
]]>It traces a tradition of thought whose basic tenets originate in the philosophical works of Jose Carlos Maritegui, and are subsequently elaborated in the literary works of Cesar Vallejo and Jose Mara Arguedas. My central thesis is that, more than a 'regionalist' or 'provincialist' literature that describes the social reality and historic oppression of the rural Indian since colonial times, the socialist indigenismo is continuous with the invention of a utopian imaginary for a project of alternative modernity, through which urban intellectuals, artists and activists conceived of a national future beyond that of capitalist modernisation. Above all, such a future would traverse the prescient division between the urban mestizo and the Indian, and finally the lingering disparity between the nation's Western and native heritage. In doing so, indigenista writers did not only adapt the tenets of socialist philosophy and avant-garde aesthetics to describe their unique social realities and thinking of the possibility of an emancipatory political practice; they also interrogated the foundations of European Marxism, expressing various figurations of the emancipatory process to come, and different models for the new revolutionary subjectivity that would aid this transition.
Rejecting assimilation into Western modernisation within the urban milieu ('acculturation') under liberal capitalism imagined by liberal writers - such as Manuel Gonzlez Prada and Clorinda Matto de Turner, in the late 19th Century - I argue that the 20th Century socialist indigenista tradition anticipated a bilateral process of appropriation and mediation between the rural Indian and mestizo, integrating indigenous as well as Western cultural and economic forms. In the first chapter, I assess Maritegui's heterodox 'Peruvian socialism', tracing the articulation of a nascent indigenista aesthetics to an emancipatory politics as part of an 'active philosophy' driven by what the author names 'creative antagonism'. In the second chapter, I explore how Cesar Vallejo's 'materialist poetics' progressively extend the nationalist destiny and social realist aesthetic avowed by Maritegui onto an internationalist and geopolitical horizon, as part of an 'aesthetics of transmutation' that coincides with a plea for humanity as a whole. In the third chapter, I trace how Jose Mara Arguedas' novels attempt to reconcile what he named 'the magical and rational conceptions of the world', extending the ideal of a transcultural mediation between the rural Indian and urban mestizo to conceive of a new collectivist and cooperativist ethics of 'labor for-itself', informed by his anthropological and ethnographic research. In the fourth chapter, I propose a general retrospective of the aims and limitations of the ideals guiding this tradition, considering the development of Peruvian indigenista literature after Arguedas, interrogating the legacy and prospects of emancipatory politics in response to the limits of neoliberal capitalism and the crisis of democracy in Latin America today.
]]>This unique interdisciplinary religious, human rights, and sociological study of medicine manuscript is an examination of not only generationally inherited ethnobotanical, pharmacognosy TBS traditions but also direct observations on how current surgical orthopedic medicine and modern-day social mechanisms clash with traditional healthcare approaches in contemporaneous and inexorable ways. Whether intentionally or not, this entrenched two-tier infrastructure supports, promotes, and maintains a fiscally and socially alienated infrastructure: one that serves the poor general public and the other that is oriented toward serving the prosperous and powerful urban class. Some argue that these disparate structures are destined to remain grassroots-based adversaries, due to systemic mistrust, irreconcilable intellectual and spiritual beliefs, and possible biochemical appropriations.
These ensuing biomedical collisions between "Western" orthopedic trauma care and traditional bonesetters in Cameroon (Central Africa), Ethiopia (East Africa), Ghana (West Africa), and Zimbabwe (South Africa) were documented over eight years via one-on-one interviews with TBS patients, practicing bonesetters, and in-country practicing orthopedic surgeons; evidence-based ethnobotanical research; and patient service preferences.
]]>In 1946 Du Bois published The World and Africa, which was a culmination of previous attempts at penning a narrative of African history beginning with his 1915 publication The Negro, in which he included the social-historical experience of African Americans within the continuity of African history. This book delivers for the first time a comprehensive Afrocentric investigation and critique of Du Bois's writings on African history. It argues that while Du Bois presented at the time a strong critique of the Eurocentric construction of African history, many of Du Bois's descriptions and arguments about African people and history were likewise flawed with interpretations that projected the cultural subjectivities of Europe. Further, while Du Bois rightfully presents the historical relationship between African Americans and Africa as a justification for Pan-African activism, this book contends that Du Bois's failure to center African culture instead of race leads to superficial justifications for Pan-African unity.

Pre-Partition India had debated whether 'liberty' understood as 'one man, one vote' or 'equality' the equal political representation of minorities within a federal structure should be the basis of a state. Congress chose 'liberty', but contemporary India is reaching the point where it has neither: its democracy is compromised and majoritarianism prevails. By dividing the subcontinent and elevating the 'cow belt', Partition seriously impeded social and economic progress in the newly created states, and brought communalism and casteism to the fore.
Javed Gaya investigates the origins and consequences of India's increasingly majoritarian system, assessing the frailty of constitutional safeguards, the role of the judiciary and the subversion of federalism.
