By questioning how trans people, both on-and offscreen, are deployed within mainstream cultural industries as representatives of political and cultural progressiveness Paige Macintosh interrogates consultancy roles and their authorship status. For a half century after the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, individual Britons and British enterprises continued to own enslaved people and invest in slavery in Brazil. This book explores the material basis of this entanglement, in the context of British anti-slavery policy, to explain how the last vestiges of British slaveholding in the Americas were only extinguished by abolition in Brazil in 1888.

The book presents recent research on the geographical, historical, and semantic trajectories of some artifacts belonging to two Brazilian Indigenous populations, but kept and exhibited in two ethnographic museums in Vienna and Lisbon. Located within the debate on the rethinking and decolonization of ethnographic collections and museums, its main objective is to investigate the role of material culture in the production of a stereotyped imaginary of the Amazonian Indigenous groups Kambeba and Munduruku. This historical study analyses the cultural, political, social, and economic developments of the post-1985 period that increased interest in European art film. It looks at the interactions of art house exhibitors with cinephile audiences, the media and the state-level administrators responsible for governing the industry. The aim of young cinephiles was nothing less than a bottom-up cultural transformation of a society emerging from three decades of dictatorship. The analysis is based on the previously unheard voices of audiences who participated in the cinephilia. This study is both a history of an era in Korean cinema and an argument about the impact of this period of cultural renewal on the industry.

By re-visiting the usefulness of the term 'queer' and pushing queer theoretical frameworks into new territory, this volume explores the ways that Gothic and queer work alongside each other: one as a marginalised genre and the other as a marginalised identity. Considering both major and lesser-known Gothic works, and ranging from the canonical (poetry and fiction) to the popular (film, video games, music, and visual and performance art), it offers queer and trans perspectives on a wide selection of Gothic modes, genres and texts from fiction such as Hugh Walpole's The Castle of Otranto to Jeanette Winterson's The Daylight Gate, films from Nosferatu to The Cured and TV shows including In the Flesh and Pose.

Amir Hosein Pourjavady scrutinises the emergence and development of modal entities, rules for modulation, the formation of court repertoires, the progress of rhythmic structures, vocal and instrumental genres and forms of composition. Through this lens, Hosein investigates how Iranian music has been impacted by Western influence, socio-political developments and contact with other musical cultures.

Moreover, we cannot be fully self-aware of our own reading habits if we do not understand the ways they continue to be shaped by the social dynamics supported and proliferated by early modern texts. Analysing key sixteenth-century printed editions, including Utopia, The Boke of the Cyte of Ladyes, Titus Andronicus, and Politeuphuia, this study provides examples of how printed Tudor fiction encourages readers to position themselves in relation to imagined others, often in ways that critique the exclusive communities associated with Tudor humanism. Subsequent editions also encouraged audiences to read 'with' a wide range of speculative fellow readers, yet also created new opportunities to exercise implicit bias against people of their own making.

A specific ideological framework undergirded the AKP's conception of the built environment, the plans it implemented to transform it and the forms of resistance that these plans generated. This framework is termed Erdoanian Neo-Ottomanism and describes AKP's use of the power of the state to shape public surroundings in their social and ideological image. By utilising an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates religion, politics and space, Courtney Dorroll and Philip Dorroll focus on the role of the Turkish state under the AKP in the restoration of traditional Islamic and Neo-Ottoman imagery and iconography.

This book explores the momentous shifts in power during this crucial decade in Turkish history through an analysis of four case studies. The 2010 designation of Istanbul as the European Capital of Culture, the 2013 Gezi Park protests, the Monument to the Martyrs of July 15 and associated memorial practices related to the 2016 coup attempt and the transition of Hagia Sophia from museum to mosque in 2020 these are identified as the most prominent ways in which the AKP has restructured public spaces in Istanbul to reflect its values. The authors scrutinise this phenomenon and intentional transformation of the physical landscape through an accessible but interpretive method that uncovers issues crucial to understanding Turkey's most recent history.

Philip Dorroll is an Associate Professor of Religion at Wofford College and Co-Chair of the Eastern Orthodox Studies Unit of the American Academy of Religion. He teaches courses on Islamic Studies and Eastern Christian Studies, such as Introduction to Islam, Premodern Islam, Contemporary Islam, Eastern Christianity, and Christian and Islamic Theology in Comparative Perspective. His published research has focused on the history of Islamic theology in classical Arabic and modern Turkish, the history of Eastern Christian theology in classical Arabic, and the historical relationship between Muslims and Eastern Orthodox Christians. His current work focuses on issues of human rights and comparative theology in the study of Islam and Orthodox Christianity, especially with a view toward understanding what these traditions' interactions with one another can teach us about the possibilities of pluralism and the advancement of human rights in contemporary societies. His other published work includes Islamic Theology in the Turkish Republic from Edinburgh University Press and the edited volume Mturd Theology: A Bilingual Reader from Mohr Siebeck (with Lejla Demiri and Dale Correa). He is currently co-chair of the Eastern Orthodox Studies Unit of the American Academy of Religion and a member of the editorial board for the journal SALT: An Orthodox Journal of Cross-Cultural Theology, Dialogue, and Mission.He received his B.A. from Purdue University, his M.A. from Indiana University and his Ph.D. from Emory University.

The term 'transgressive art film' designates the phenomenon of a small number of controversial films recuperated each year by the cinema art world as part of an expansion of the definition of film art. Rather than seeing controversial films as aberrations, this book suggests that transgressive art films should be understood as a socio-cultural phenomenon and a central plank of cinema's need for newness, innovation, and renewal. By paying attention to all scales of cinema, from close analysis of individual frames, through the discourse constructed around them, up to global distribution and film-festival networks, Transgressive Art Films details how certain kinds of cinematic transgression gain wide-ranging institutional support rather than being ignored or forgotten.

The nineteenth-century rise of the middle class coincided with realism becoming the dominant artistic mode in both form and content, leading to a revival of genre painting in the art academies; the supremacy of the social melodrama on the stage; and the advent of Pictorialism in photography. In its quest for artistic legitimacy, European filmmakers sought to win over middle-class audiences with films based on popular works of art the first 'art films' by employing similar visual and narrative strategies as its artistic counterparts.

Over three sections, the book provides perspectives on gender representation in East and South-East Asian cinema; new explorations of women's labour contributions as directors, screenwriters, and editors; and considerations of the contemporary circulation processes through which such work reaches global audiences.

By recentring women's film histories within the broader history of cinema and interrogating the geo-political boundaries of what might constitute 'East Asia' in the process, this volume makes a robust intervention into studies of East Asian cinema and women in film.

Informed by the latest research from the UK and around the world, the book draws on a series of UK-based studies over a six-year period between 2019-2024, systematically analysing over 4000 news items and sources across fact-checking sites and broadcast programming. It examines audiences through a survey of more than 1,000 people, a news diary study of 200 participants, and fourteen focus groups, in addition to interviewing some of the most prominent news editors and journalists in broadcast news.

The authors look beyond disinformation emanating from online and social media platforms to identify where and how misinformation can spread across mainstream media. To enhance the legitimacy of journalism and better serve the public, they argue that news reporting should more regularly and robustly confront false and misleading information from politicians.

She is a feminist Continental philosopher and she holds degrees in philosophy from the ANU and the Sorbonne and Honorary Degrees from Helsinki, (2007) and Linkoping (2013). She is an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA) and also a Member of the Academia Europaea. In 2022 she received the Humboldt Research Award for life-long contribution to scholarship. Nowhere is this risk explored more fully than in a range of American realist texts from the Cold War to the twentieth century's end. This critical study exposits the discomforting idea that something is missing and that this 'something' makes Black theology seem a little deficient, as noted in the pioneering works of James Baldwin and other contemporary thinkers, challenging the hesitation to engage with ideas outside Black experience. The second step draws from multidisciplinary sources, including brain research on cognitive bias and psychological works on implicit bias and microaggressions. Effectively utilising the methodological work of Bernard Lonergan, the book argues that incorporating 'white' sources can enhance Black theology's articulation against racism.
