]]>After serving as a lieutenant in the Australian Army, in 1946 Clift joined the staff of Melbourne's Argus newspaper, where she met fellow journalist George Johnston. Over the next twenty-three years, the couple raised three children, produced thirty books, and created a legend.
While living in Greece, Clift wrote the travel memoirs Mermaid Singing and Peel Me a Lotus, and the novels Walk to the Paradise Gardens and Honour's Mimic. She also began the autobiographical novel titled The End of the Morning, which she regarded as her major work.
Returning to Australia in 1964, Charmian Clift set her novel aside so that she could devote her time to her weekly newspaper column and to her family commitments. Although she resumed work on The End of the Morning in 1968, she died a year later, before the book was completed.

]]>Roughly 1000 to 4000 metres below sea level lies the bathypelagic (also known as the 'midnight') zone. No sunlight penetrates these depths. It's a constant 4 Celsius and water pressure reaches 680 kilograms per square centimetre. The creatures who inhabit this zone are often transparent, moving minimally to conserve energy, as they carry out their bioluminescent lives under the ocean's crushing weight. Bathypelagia is an imaginary space, a miniature sea. It's a viscous metaphor and an internal state. Lying awake at 3 a.m., it's the menagerie of quietly fraught voices you might hear in those small hours. Here, the lines are blurred between lover and predator, nurture and survival, between the intimate and the strange (and estranged). Distances aren't always easy to judge, and migration is more likely to be vertical. But under the cover of darkness, tender moments also find refuge.
These poems were written over a long and discontinuous period, starting about 15 years ago. Back then, I snorkelled and scuba-dived regularly. Some of my most alive experiences have been drifting underwater, without words. Equally, many of them have been when I'm suspended inside a poem.
This is a book of encounters. Some of them have human hands, some fins, yet others, tentacles. Some even beat with three hearts. If you draw a long breath, kick down into the gloom and hold very still, these poems, I hope, will swim a little closer.

]]>This book is a new assessment of the ideology and political program of Britain's fascist and extreme right-wing community during the interwar period (1919-1940). It examines this group's belief system as it clustered around three major preoccupations Modernisation, Empire, and War. In doing so, the book identifies many inconsistencies, contradictions, and moral failings, which contributed to the failure of the far-right tendency in the interwar years. The numerous beliefs and policies examined all point to a movement that was determined to return Britain to the levels of global power and international leadership it had once enjoyed but by means of policies of disengagement and isolation. As such, it provides insight into the resurgence of the extreme right today.
]]>When Robert Rauschenberg reminisced about Josef Albers teaching students that their art had to do with 'the entire visual world', he was suggesting an inclusive realm of visual expression from which Albers intended his students to draw. Beyond finding inspiration only in fine art objects, Albers pushed them to look outside the confines of their studios and classrooms and onto the streets where they would be confronted with the visuality of mass culture; Albers therefore developed assignments using examples of typographic design and printed imagery drawn from popular publications of the day. In looking closely at these printed images, though, artists like Rauschenberg learned not only that visual inspiration could be found in quotidian objects, but that those objects were also the products of aesthetic decision making, that they were designed. Although the visual workings of mass imagery have sometimes been met with discomfort by art historians and critics, culture's simultaneous engagement with design and art objects has a long and significant history. My book would be among the first to examine a moment of that history through an exploration of the critical intersection between art and graphic design in New York in the years between 1959 and 1972.
It may seem most expedient to discuss the connection between art and design through formal congruences, but this strategy can limit the deeper investigation of the mutual influence shared by these two areas of production. Indeed, the presumption that there exists simply and only a visual connection between design and art has driven most of the art history that has taken up the subject. This methodology, however, assumes that the influence of popular imagery on fine art works only in one direction, and that movements such as Pop art borrow motifs from mass culture and then 'elevate' them into high art. This ignores any influence that art might have on design and designers, an influence that has considerable impact on our visual world. In addition, it serves to place mass imagery consistently in the lesser, negative position because it always presupposes design's complicity in the culture industry. Yet I show that not all design is made for commercial purposes. Design with civic intentions that developed for signage, street furniture, and subway maps has had no place in such a formulation, and therefore has never been seriously included in art historical discussions, even those that take design into account.

Right now, Africa doesn't seem armed to offer jobs to this many people, resulting in possible unrest and intra-African or intercontinental migration flows, including to Europe. Climate change creates additional migratory pressure as it threatens the future of agriculture and livestock.
The author explores the opportunities for increased job creation in Africa. Work provides income, and decent and meaningful jobs contribute to prospects and social stability. The evolution of the labour market is essential for the continent's future. Fortunately, Africa has some major strengths. The continent has the youngest population in the world and represents a wealth of creativity and innovation. Moreover, Africans excel in 'market-creating innovation': the ability to see market opportunities and innovations that others do not. Africans create their own jobs through micro and small enterprises. A young well-trained middle class, familiar with digital technologies, is emerging. Africa's abundant natural resources also attract global regional powers aspiring to secure access to critical raw materials, something the continent can use to its own advantage.
Special attention goes to the European Union's Africa policy: the book takes a critical look at the European Union' intentions and approach and formulates recommendations to the European Commission. The author combines economic analysis with stories from twenty-five years of experience with impact investments in Africa. He challenges the typical pessimistic stereotypes about the continent and provides an optimistic vision of Africa's future.

It shows how such positionality impacts the ability of Roma to self-represent politically and build capacity for change. From the position of unbelonging the book offers an account of Romani agency which both challenges the mainstream representations of Roma but also develops an alternative none-nation-state sense of belonging. In doing so the book outlines an account of Romani alternative expressions in order to take control of their relationship with their own history, future, knowledge, and identity, and the rest of the society.

The restoration of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government in 2007 was made possible by State Department-led intervention in the peace process. There are few references to Northern Ireland in work examining the foreign policy legacy of the George W. Bush presidency. Moreover, the ability to control US foreign policy towards the region brought one of George W. Bush's Northern Ireland special envoys into direct diplomatic conflict with the most senior actors inside the British government. ]]>To her, statelessness was the product of a failed European nation-state system. We find a very different story when we examine the history of stateless people, many of them Jews, fleeing to Asia from Europe. In Asia, we see that being stateless was not a uniform experience, but a variety of possibilities reflecting the political structure of the states and cities in which refugees found shelter. We find too that stateless people managed to enter the political realm long before they reached the threshold of citizenship.

Situating infertility within this history, the author details innovations in fertility medicine, cultural awareness of artificial insemination, and changing laws on child adoption. These practices offered new ways of responding to infertility and formed part of a growing expectation of being able to control one's fertility and family size.
