The book begins by providing a theoretical and historical overview of empathy as a term and educational tool in the English speaking context. The first two chapters lay the groundwork for the remaining close reading chapters by introducing two new terms: 'pop empathy' and 'empathic education'. I argue that pop empathy is defined by neoliberalism and the commodification of empathy in marketing, advertising, politics and artificial intelligence and that this is impacting the rhetoric of contemporary educational policy in Australia and the United States. Empathic education is defined by educational theory and practice where the experience of empathy is foregrounded as a form of knowledge creation or acquisition. I draw pop empathy and empathic education into conversation throughout the book and use both terms to assist my argument that a complex approach to empathy for literary studies may benefit classroom teaching and learning by resisting over-systematised education.

The remaining chapters of the book offer four unique approaches to empathic literary criticism informed by interdisciplinary methodologies, including educational theory, cognitive science, the philosophy of psychology and literary studies. Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6 provide readings of texts frequently prescribed for English literary study belonging to different genres: Shakespeare's Hamlet, the poetry of John Keats, the short stories 'A Good Man Is Hard to Find' and 'Everything That Rises Must Converge' by Flannery O'Connor, and Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Each chapter engages with the text's historical educational context and its contemporary relation to empathy while offering fresh close readings by applying a critical empathy lens. As a result, these chapters complicate and contribute to debates about the empathic value of subject English. I show how the authors and texts studied bear the mark of empathic education and as a result they offer unique impressions of empathy's make-up and capabilities. Through my readings, I show how empathy has consistently featured in literary studies across time periods and genres while complicating popular rhetorical uses of empathy. I address this wide scope of historical and generic texts as they relate to the current educational landscape because I argue for a new approach to integrating empathy into subject English that privileges empathy as a form of critical interpretation rather than a student outcome.

It is a labour of generosity that is at the core of the architectural agenda, when we architects are able to address the client's desires and add our own agendas in response to inherent urban issues to fulfil our true civic responsibility.

Current debates in the environmental humanities, animal studies, and related fields increasingly revolve around this question: What to do with 'the human'? Is the human a category worth preserving? Should it be replaced with the post-human? Should marginalised and minoritarian groups advocate for a universal humanism? What is the relationship between humanism and anthropocentrism? Is a genuinely non-anthropocentric mode of thinking and living possible for human beings? This book argues that the writings of twentieth-century poet Robinson Jeffers offer twenty-first-century readers a number of crucial insights concerning such questions and timely advice about how not to be human. For Jeffers, our tendency to turn inward on ourselves and to indulge in human narcissism is at the heart of the social, economic, and existential ills that plague modern societies. As a remedy, Jeffers recommends turning ourselves outward beyond the self and beyond the human and learning to affirm and even love the inhuman cosmos in all of its terrible beauty. In the process, Jeffers helps us find our way back to ourselves, but this time no longer as 'human' in the traditional sense but as plain members of the inhuman world.

Through comparative case studies of Italy and the Netherlands, it analyses how parties deploy gendered narratives to oppose feminist and LGBTQ+ rights, justify anti-immigrant policies, and consolidate political power. Drawing on political speeches, campaign materials, manifestos, media coverage, and electoral data, the study reveals the intersections of gender with race, religion, and class in shaping political discourse. The monograph shows that gender is not a peripheral concern but a central axis in far-right strategies, influencing public opinion, social norms, and policy outcomes. By uncovering these dynamics, the book offers insights into the broader implications of far-right politics for democracy, social justice, and inclusive governance in Europe.

The papers can be roughly divided between 'the philosophy of mind' and 'the philosophy of language'. They are, however, united by the idea that this standard classification of topics stands in the way of clear thinking about core issues, and, closely connected with that, united by the idea that the notion of a human being must be central to any philosophical treatment of them. Cockburn's approach is marked by the detailed attention given to the human bodily form, and his approach to language by the central place given to the idea of conversation. The discussions are enriched by incorporating some consideration of our relation to non-human creatures. The papers are linked by an insistence on the inescapably ethical dimension of any adequate discussion of these issues. While the debt to Wittgenstein is enormous, a number of the papers involve what may be significant criticisms of him.

The author, a self-described 'militant moderate', draws on his participation in many public debates. The articles are grouped into six parts, topical groupings that range widely: the growing need for moderate voices in policy debates, the nature of American exceptionalism, the challenge of civic discourse, the depredations of the Trump years, and policies concerning immigration, citizenship, and refugees.

The case studies include the evolution of the ICRC's approach to IHL training, the views on IHL of newly promoted U.S. Army and Marine Corps majors in the aftermath of 9/11, mental health surveys of U.S. troops deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq that asked searching questions regarding IHL compliance, the remarkably successful battlefield ethics training program that was developed in Iraq to reverse those surveys' results, and work done with Swiss Military Academy officers, new Malian soldiers, a U.S. Army battalion in Germany, and university students in Ireland and Japan using war video games as an IHL instructional tool. The use of empirical assessment is occurring in the context of evolution in the approach to IHL training, one that increasingly recognises the vital role played by military leaders in developing a values-oriented culture of compliance with the soldiers in their units.

Excavating the Castle demonstrates that the Gothic novel was present in the selective tradition almost from its inception, was present in the first durable consolidation of English literary history written after its emergence, and that the Gothic concept crystalised more than half a century earlier than historians of the Gothic had realised previously. The historiography of the Gothic has long been considered a settled story, though the findings of this book call that story into significant question. How did we miss so much of the story? This is above all a work of literary history, but it is a work of literary history designed to serve the needs of the field of Gothic studies. That said, it is also about more than the Gothic, implicating much larger issues related to the history of ideas; book history; information and library sciences; the materials, methods, and practice of literary history; the digital humanities; and even questions of individual positionality and human contingency.

Hume and Wittgenstein are our prime examples of philosophers who were aware that through their work, they had undermined the very possibility of doing such work that the aims of traditional philosophy are out of reach and thus have been thoroughly embarrassed. What are the upshots, they ask, for philosophers and their subject? One way of responding was to give up the traditional aims so as to protect oneself from further embarrassment. This was the strategy we find in the early Wittgenstein, the Vienna Circle, and in Quine who, in their own ways, tried to reconceive the aims and subject matter of philosophy in a narrow fashion that took science as its model. This move, however, comes with its own embarrassments, as we illustrate with the later Wittgenstein's cautionary remarks about the embarrassments of scientism and his warnings about the related inclination to self-deception.

A doctor's education looks at first sight like a straightforward technical training, but 're-membering' it as a personal experience creates a new and disturbing picture, a blend of joys, absurdities and frustrations. The author observes his younger self's efforts to communicate and to regulate feelings in the prescribed way, and begins to see that to become a doctor is to be at the mercy of almost irresistible pressures. He picks up habits by mimicking the teachers, with sometimes disastrous results.

Communication, and even empathy, are made to seem like performances in which the doctor's self need play no part. Any other way of being a doctor is unimaginable. Hospital medicine figures in the book as a universe that is loveable and yet tragically unable to engage with its patients' ordinary lives. Doctors in the 1960s, as now, were focused on disease and had little to say about illness and suffering, let alone death. They were, and still are, curiously silent about healing, recovery and rehabilitation.

By making decisions, a person shifts their modal (possible) worlds, which include their sets of circumstances and their vistas on various aspects of life. A shift between different positions on one's existence in this world creates structural cognitive, emotional and strategic changes that transform what is possible and what is impossible with regard to one's life choices. The decision-making process, on fundamental life issues, is crucially related not only to one's general values but also to one's view of logical possibilities. Textiles are an artistic means of articulation: sensitive, political, defiant. Ever since the 1960s in particular, textile arts have become increasingly recognised and subsequently established as an art form in their own right, with female artists blowing apart traditional concepts in their work: textiles became sculptures, installations, social gestures and a medium of feminist empowerment.

This current publication focuses on 40 specially selected 20th- and 21st-century female positions in Europe that evince the multifaceted development of textile expression up to the present day. The charged relationship of textile and body runs through many of the compiled works. For textiles are frequently experienced up close they touch us, literally. And it is in precisely this closeness that the functional or critical, fragile and poetic potential of many textile works unfolds.
