Commemorating the College's centenary, Vision and Hope is an illustrated history of St Mark's and the people who have passed through its doors over the past 100 years.

St Mark's was founded through the efforts of a group of tireless individuals and generous philanthropy. In its 100-year history, it has been a formative experience and stepping stone, producing leaders in science, medicine, politics, law and the arts. There have also been challenges, disappointments and moments of true despair, which have forced College leaders to radically rethink significant aspects of College life.

Combining both extensive oral histories and archival research, Vision and Hope is a vivid contribution to the history of education set against the background of wider social themes and local, national and global events, including a world war, economic depressions and, more recently, a pandemic.

Paul Sendziuk is an associate professor of Australian history at the University of Adelaide. He is the author or editor of five books, including A History of South Australia, which was awarded the Keain Medal by the Historical Society of South Australia, In the Eye of the Storm: Volunteers and Australia's Response to the HIV/AIDS Crisis, joint winner of the Oral History Australia Book Award, and Learning to Trust: Australian Responses to AIDS, shortlisted for the Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's Human Rights Award for non-fiction.

Australia, and Australians, stood at a crossroads in October 2023. Before them lay a new and more accommodating way to practice democracy, a future in which First Nations people were given a representative voice in political decisions in this country. After months of a referendum campaign, struggling over foundational ideals and questions of national identity, misinformation, disinformation and racism, the proposal was overwhelmingly rejected in every Australian state and nationally. The referendum campaign was Australia's first since the failed attempt at a republic in 1999. The political and media environment in which the referendum campaign would unfold was fundamentally changed. These changes included the growth of social media, growing distrust of major political parties, and the rise of fake news and populist politics.

This book brings together a diverse set of perspectives to explore the many and complex political, social and historical factors that influenced the conduct of the campaign and led to the loss. It includes contributions from lawyers, political scientists, historians, human rights experts, health policy experts, land rights campaigners and Indigenous affairs policy experts. The contributors in this book include First Nations and non-Indigenous authors, often writing collaboratively. The majority of the views offered, based in expertise and experience, are those of First Nations. Their writings place the referendum loss in the context of political failure and attempts at structural reform, and Australia's terrible record at amending the Constitution through referendums. The book traces the legal and political development of the draft constitutional provision, and the influence of legal risk on the campaign. A major focus of the book is the impact of misinformation and disinformation, which was rife during the campaign, and media reporting of it. The role that civil society and corporate Australia played in the campaign is considered. The Voice campaign will be placed in the context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander politics and previous attempts at representation. The book will also place the call for Voice in the context of its ongoing relevance and imperative in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs, explaining the power of representation, the Voice as an expression of sovereignty, and the need for Voice to pursue other structural reforms such as treaty and to realise the promise of land rights. The book concludes by reflecting on the role that history played in the campaign and the implications of the campaign for the practice of Australian history.

The book holds lessons for future constitutional change, Indigenous recognition, structural reform and Australia's democracy. It also looks, with constructive pragmatism, at the future direction of First Nations structural reform in Australia and the practice of democracy.

Megan Davis AC is the Whitlam Fraser Chair at Harvard University and Visiting Professor Harvard Law School (20242025) and the Balnaves Chair in Constitutional Law. Megan is a Pro Vice-Chancellor Society at UNSW (Sydney) and a Scientia Professor and Director of the Indigenous Law Centre at UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice. Megan has been the leading constitutional lawyer working on constitutional recognition since 2010. She served on the Prime Minister's Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians (2011) and the Prime Minister's Referendum Council (2015-2017), where she chaired the Indigenous Steering Committee and designed the First Nations Regional Dialogues and the National Constitutional Convention. From 2022 to 2023, Davis served on the Prime Minister's Referendum Working Group and Referendum Engagement Group and the Attorney General's Constitutional Expert Group.

The stories bring into question the relation between the natural and unnatural forces of change and expose responses to, and lessons learnt, from different disaster crises situations. Stories also focus on how means to adapt are sought. The projected fictions are created from projected current climate facts; trends; and the author's experience of population displacement, relocation and design-based climate change responsive action. Central to the book is the recognition that to be able to respond and adapt to the scale of coming changes in the climate requires going beyond existing practical action and embracing a new way of imagining futures. Disappearing Cities aims to stimulate ways of meeting this need.

The book opens with a Prologue that establishes the contextual frame of empirical foundation out of which the fictions are created. It recognises that we all live in a world in which the conditions that will result in huge numbers of cities disappearing are underway. From the human perspective, the process appears to be very slow, whereas in historico-geological time, it is happening exceptionally quickly. The number of the loss of cities is going to be huge, yet the recognition that this will occur is not arriving, In part, this is because of a lack of knowledge, but equally, it reflects a lack of imagination. Transposing what is known about climate change by a significant percentage of the societies of many nations to actual environments in which they live is just not arriving. What appears so solid and established fails to be seen and imagined as a risk and vulnerable. From establishing this opening perspective, the first part of the book presents stories of cities already disappearing as a result of the forces of nature changed by anthropogenically created global warming. Part two discusses the impacts of natural disasters being made unnaturally. For example, by the way industrial societies are damaging and changing natural systems, including the climatic. The final part goes to cities destroyed by completely unnatural means, including war.

Disappearing Cities aims to contribute to meeting the need for a better understanding of, and ability to imagine, the risks to which vast numbers of cities are, and will be, exposed to forces of disappearance. To do this, the narratives are a hybrid of fact and fiction. The work was inspired by Italo Calvino's book Invisible Cities and is intended to be a salient contemporary companion to this text. It mirrors its form but differs in style and content. Invisible Cities attained diverse readership, Disappearing Cities aspires to do likewise.

After Australia witnessed a reinvigorated public interest in the revisionist history of European settlement and colonial violence, resulting in the dispossession of Indigenous people and damaged settlerIndigenous relations, Australian settler majority has experienced an unsettlement of their sense of belonging, or the so-called 'settler anxiety'. The book analyses how settler (un)belonging is narrativised in popular memoirs written by Australian public intellectuals, such as historians, artists, writers, and commentators, in the period after 2000.

These memoirs of settler belonging share one aspect: they all ask and seek answers to the implicit question, how to belong as a White settler who bears witness to the legacy of violent colonization vis--vis continuing Indigenous dispossession? How to justify the settler presence in and love of the land that was stolen from First Australians? The individual chapters examine historians' memoirs, White women's travel narratives, experimental place-writing, and eco- and landscape memoirs, tracing a gradual shift in literary representations of settler anxiety and detecting new perspectives on what can be called ethical settler belonging.

There is a fundamental mismatch between the global trade rules as they govern international economic behaviour and the political economic factors influencing domestic policy making. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the multilateral trading system is in crisis. Countries are increasingly turning to bilateral and regional (and mega-regional) trade deals to push forward their trade agenda. There is far less consensus around these next-generation trade agreements which reach into every aspect of domestic policy-making. At this time, more than ever, policy-makers, treaty negotiators, and scholars and students of international law need to understand the ways in which this growing regime of international trade and investment impacts regulatory decisions.

This book demonstrates how seemingly disparate spheres of legal theory and practice (investment incentives, patent protection, land reform, etc.) are all linked together through the lens of international trade and investment, while also offering solutions in the form of new negotiating texts and country examples as a way forward toward a new multilateral trade and investment regime. Furthermore, each chapter identifies the regulatory challenges facing countries.

Its goal is to uncover the secrets of verbal art reception and to explain how readers come to understand and like literary texts. The book offers state-of-the-art computational models and methods allowing to predict which crucial textual features of prose and poetry, such as syntactic and semantic complexity or emotion potential, interact with reader features, such as empathy or openness to experience, in shaping a literary reading act with its neuronal, experiential and behavioural correlates. It contains hands-on practical examples on how to do computational text analyses of books and poems that can answer questions like:

• Which is Jane Austen's most beautiful book?
• Which poet created the most fitting poetic metaphors? or
• Which author of plays of the nineteenth century was the most literary?

The model and methods introduced in the book help explain what makes texts comprehensible and likeable and how they affect our body and mind. It offers game-changing insights for both fundamental and applied science that will affect standard metrics of readability and the way text processing and verbal art reception are viewed in literary studies, education, psychology or the media sciences and industry.

War and Peace in the Worlds of Rudolf H. Sauter is the first book to examine the creative life and worlds of Rudolf H. Sauter (1895-1977), the German-born artist, poet, cultural observer and nephew of the famed novelist John Galsworthy. Revealing him to be a creative figure in his own right, it examines his early life as a German immigrant in Britain, his formative years during the run-up to the Great War, his wartime internment as an 'enemy alien,' and the postwar development of his intriguing body of artistic and literary work. Placing Sauter and his creative life in the historical contexts they have long deserved, this life story opens a window onto subjects of war, love, memory, travel and existential concerns of modern times.

The basic idea of this book is an attempt to describe and critically interpret the condition of man living in the shadow of the Shoah, in the world 'after Jews'. The author achieves this by referring to the language of political theology, renewing the meaning of such theological concepts as eternity, salvation, the idea of the chosen people, apocalypse, radical hope, and others. He seeks an answer to the question of the conditions for the possibility of the Shoah, all this in order to better understand today's growing aggression against people of strong faith, strong traditional beliefs. Is the disturbing thought of the recurrence of the Shoah, the repetition of the worst scenario that has already happened once in the modern world, an overstated thought, an exaggerated suspicion, a neurosis? The author asks several twentieth-century writers and philosophers such as Rene Girard, D.H. Lawrence, Jacob Taubes, Joseph Roth, Primo Levi, Jean Amery, W.G. Sebald, K.K. Baczyski, Czesaw Miosz, Krzysztof Michalski, Jonathan Lear, Hannah Arendt, Vasily Rozanov, Giorgio Agamben, and Martin Heidegger to answer these disturbing questions. The exceptions are William Shakespeare and St. Paul, who, however, can also be considered contemporary because of their timeless presence.

With a focus on the aesthetic and philosophical roots which lie at the heart of the Gothic, the study invokes its literary as well as filmic forebears by exploring how these styles informed strands of the modern filmic Gothic: the ghost narrative, folk horror, the vampire movie, cosmic horror and, finally, the zombie film. In recent years, the concept of transnationalism has 'trans'-cended its original boundaries, perhaps excessively in the minds of some. Originally defined in the wake of the rise of globalisation in the 1990s, as a way to study cinema beyond national boundaries, where the look and the story of a film reflected the input of more than one nation, or region, or culture. It was considered too confining to study national cinemas in an age of internationalisation, witnessing the fusions of cultures, and post-colonialism, exile and diasporas. The concept allows us to appreciate the broader range of forces from a wider international perspective while at the same time also engaging with concepts of nationalism, identity and an acknowledgement of cinema itself.

The gig public departs from traditional notions of publicness and the public, characterised by individuals' spontaneous and less-structured engagement in public discourse. This engagement is often hampered by challenges in fostering sustained interaction and depth of discussion, due to the ephemeral nature of online interactions.

In particular, this monograph highlights the importance of customs, negotiations, and contracts that complement the normatively privileged public reasoning in public domains. It examines the transformations in the multifaceted nature of the public and its interrelationship with other social structures amid the shifting boundaries between public and private domains. In addition, it explores the evolution of conceptualisations of publicness and related concepts within critical theory, illustrating how contemporary shifts are redefining civic engagement and the essence of public life in a rapidly changing world. From these perspectives, the study is structured around three primary focal points: First, it analyses how new information technologies and AI have altered human interactions within the public sphere. Second, it examines the impact of capitalist economic dynamics and governmentality strategies on reshaping the public realm, fundamentally altering the essence of the public and its democratic potential. Third, it explores how habitual and routine practices traditionally associated with the private sphere are now influencing the ongoing evolution of publicness.

The monograph aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges posed by the fragmentation of contemporary public discourse and the emergence of gig publics. It also considers strategies to invigorate publicness through AI technology that enables users to transform plain language into automated actions on their computers, potentially reshaping civic engagement in the digital age.

This scholarly monograph examines the concept of Chernobyl trauma by situating it at the interface of clinical diagnoses of survivors' Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, their expressions of this trauma in published testimonials translated into English, and through English-language literary explorations of contemporary Soviet trauma. It establishes a new perspective on the intergenerational and international reception of the nuclear disaster, one shaped by Soviet cultural memory as well as Science Fiction and the literary aesthetics of the Gothic.

The monograph analyses first-generation Chernobyl survivors' imaginative reconstruction of events through testimony in the face of the Soviet Party's attempts to sublimate the narrative of the disaster into an official account. It also discusses the ways in which a second generation represents inherited, traumatic memory through a literary diaspora of Chernobyl and Soviet-Kazakh Semipalatinsk nuclear trauma, and how English-speaking writers not personally involved in the disaster engage in its memorialisation through discourses of horror and collective mourning.

His designs are always about reducing the chair to its absolute minimum: it should be simple like a line drawing, manufactured with little material effort or literally cast from a mold. In doing so, a joy in experimenting with the material wood, rubber, felt, rope plays as much a role as the intense dialogue with the respective manufacturers. The production possibilities for every option are thoroughly researched.

This publication presents a first, all-encompassing overview of this outstanding designer's work. It serves as a roundtable discussion between the authors, who hail from the fields of design and art history, with some individual contributions accompanied by comments from other participants. In addition, it focuses on Boris Berlin's innovative solutions, the development of materials and production methods, and his concomitant contribution to a sustainable design future. Through this discursive approach, the book aims to set thoughts in motion and stimulate discussions on contemporary design topics.

This edited volume sheds light on the unique capacity of the comics medium for redrawing histories and for exploring hidden, forbidden or imagined spaces. Studying a variety of texts from the French-speaking world, it considers how bandes dessinees (BD) and graphic novels can highlight environmental, gender, racial, religious, political and social questions. It also demonstrates how BD can offer readers new perspectives through formal experiment and through reworking and subverting dominant iconographies. The contributions in this volume showcase how the comic medium, through the combination of text and image, engages with notions of voice, power, bias and perspective, and can be used as a pedagogical tool and a form of resistance to discuss diversity, decolonisation, inclusion and social justice issues.

This book examines law reform debates about religious exceptions to anti-discrimination laws, legal recognition of trans people, bans on 'conversion therapy', and sex and LGBT education in schools from jurisdictions like the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. Drawing from socio-legal theories, this book develops the concept of 'emotional grammar' to show how emotions structure law reform pursuits (by threading Hansard, legislation, case law, law reform consultations, statutory guidance) and explains why addressing this emotional grammar is important for scholars, lawyers, judges, legislators, and activists seeking to navigate conflicts over LGBT rights and reforms that aim to repair the inequalities faced by LGBT people.

Each chapter offers a different perspective on the theme of historical writing and remembrance. The first section (Texts and their Histories) focuses on the creation and function of medieval historical texts; a wide range of texts are investigated here, including chronicles and narrative histories, charters, and the Welsh triads. The second section (History and Identity) concerns the relationship between writing history and identity construction; chapters consider different aspects of this theme, including the role of bishops in writing history and the use of names to construct ethnic identities. The third and final section (Memory and Nation) widens the lens to investigate strategies of remembrance and the performance of history; this includes essays on the Eisteddfod, tattoos of historical individuals and the role of historical pageants in twentieth-century nation building. Taken together, the contributions to the volume offer new insights into Welsh historical writing and perceptions of the past throughout the ages.

Gucci's press release reflects the popularization of critical theory in public discourse and fashion in particular. Philosophers, activists and academics are increasingly recruited to collaborate with luxury brands, and main-stream fashion brands have begun to adopt a discourse about politics and critical thinking using, in their communication, concepts such as 'resistance', 'gender fluidity', 'national identity' or 'cultural heritage' without accompanying these discourses with any form of political engagement or activism.

Based on this intellectualisation of the fashion industry and the recent proliferation of critical theory in fashion education, this book stresses the importance of rethinking the relationship between fashion and theory. Drawing together eleven chapters and four conversations by and with philosophers, cultural theorists, historians, anthropologists, activists, performers and designers, the book investigates both the theorisation of fashion and the ways in which fashion offers a useful landscape in understanding the current state of critical theory today.

Women across a wide political spectrum actively engaged in public debates over the war through meetings, speeches, petitions, electioneering, and the press. From the start pacifist women made important contributions to the anti-war movement, later providing vital backing for Emily Hobhouse's campaign to reform the concentration camps. Women imperialists supported the war effort through military philanthropy and imperial propaganda. Under Millicent Garrett Fawcett the government-appointed Ladies' Committee transformed the camps, while hundreds of British women were recruited as camps teachers and nurses. Fundamentally shaped by ideologies of gender and race, women's responses to this imperial war continued to influence women's public action and discourses of citizenship into the First World War.

Settlers recreated this metropolitan popular culture throughout the empire and in places under foreign control. They erected music halls resembling those at home, imported songs and sketches, performed in amateur shows and watched touring professionals. London originals were rewritten as commentaries on local conditions. This activity transformed music hall into a marker of an exclusionary British identity overseas and made colonies look and sound more like Britain. The result was that settlers separated by vast distances were linked by a shared popular culture. The touring circuits and cultural affinities the Victorians created endure to this day.

Engaging with Simon Barker's seminal work on dramatic representations of war and militarism, contributors highlight what often lies hidden beneath the surface of martial narratives, treating them as formative interventions in contemporary discourses, whether in justifying war, excluding dissident voices or shaping cultural identities. Discussions include new examinations of militarism, the figure of the soldier and early modern theories of war in Shakespearean tragedy, history and comedy, alongside antimasque and dramatic satire by lesser-known playwrights. As has been noted by scholars, this period is marked by a profusion of objects granted special importance, imaginary as well as material. These objects prompt reconsideration of cultural and intellectual frameworks, for example of superstition, reform, and heresy, that never quite successfully contain them. Essays in this volume centre attention on these things themselves, from puppets to rosaries, as indeed do the written accounts through which they are often mediated. The Witchcraft Act of 1736 brought an end to witch trials in Britain. But just because the law had changed didn't mean people had stopped believing. Fear of witches and faith in magic persisted, and people suspected of witchcraft continued to appear in court until the early twentieth century, though by then it was their persecutors who were being put on trial.

In this book, Owen Davies traces the history of witches and magic in Britain from 1736 to 1951, when the Fraudulent Mediums Act finally erased the concept of witchcraft from the statute books. He reveals the grip that the supernatural continued to exert on the people of England and Wales in a period when the forces of progress were thought to have vanquished such beliefs.

Exploring how the population coped with the threat of witches once there was no longer any legal redress, and how accusations of witchcraft took shape during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Davies provides a fascinating glimpse into a lingering world of supernatural belief.

It considers systematically the question of the management of ethnic difference in multinational imperial states as diverse as Britain, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. It traces the regional experiences and impact of British scholars and public intellectuals steering through competing nationalisms and translating regional national questions to British and international audiences.
